It is that time of the year again when the Sun is high and nights get longer and hotter! It’s the Summer Season! Aside from having the chance to get a break from work or from school, Summer is also the time to enjoy a wide variety of activities that suit you, your family, and your friends! From the usual outing to beaches up to the extreme activities possible this season, you name it and you got the whole season to enjoy with the rest of the family and the gang. All these activities are of real fun but they can also be really tiring for the human body. Given that the Summer Season is a real deal of thrilling heat, one may lose larger amount of body liquid with all the fun activities than the usual. This means that a person must have an intake of more liquid than the usual in order to avoid dehydration and other Summer-related unwanted conditions.

Water is the most common liquid one can take in order to avoid dehydration. Unlike any other drinks, it will not cause craving to take another liquid. For instance, after a person finishes his soda drink, he may want to drink a glass or two of water because of the common sweet taste of a soda drink. Juice, milk, and coffee can be good substitutes for a while when water is not available but not alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks may not be an ideal substitute for hydration. Nephrologist Steven Guest, MD said that alcoholic drinks interfere with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can lead to dehydration.

It's a popular belief that water helps the skin keep looking good and that it clears the skin from unwanted patches like acnes. Since the temperature is high during Summer, this may cause dehydration and dryness on the skin. And, water is a healthy pick to keep the skin cool and hydrated! Dermatologist Kenneth Ellner, MD said that dehydration makes the skin look more dry and wrinkled but it can be improved with proper hydration which makes the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids. Water also helps to flush out toxins out of your body freeing you from any dirt or bacteria. Moisturizers are also of big help to lock moisture in the skin.

Since Summer is a time for gathering with family and friends, it is best enjoyed with variety of foods served on the table. You get to enjoy your all-time Pinoy-favorite dessert, Halo-Halo, more than ever! And, all those delightful dishes prepared by your love ones for your family Summer getaway. Your stomach may seem full for the whole season. Water is good in helping maintain normal bowel function because proper hydration keeps things flowing along the digestive track and avoids constipation. Dietician for the Beverage Institute Joan Koelemay, RD said that adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination because, she added, the fluid pumps up the fiber and acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly. One does not want to get his Summer spoiled because of constipation.

There’s also a wide variety of fruits that are rich in water like Watermelons, Grapefruits, Peaches, Pineapples, and certain types of berries. You can also try incorporating fruits with your water to make it more extraordinary and exciting. Try infusing it with lemons or oranges. Both can be healthy picks!

This Summer Season, nobody wants to sacrifice his health over fun. Prevention is always better than cure and it would save you money that could be used for more activities with the whole family and friends rather than spending it for medicine and treatments for sickness and illness because of not taking good care of yourself. Indeed, the season is worth the fun but pay extra caution especially today that temperatures are already hitting dangerous levels.
